The study, Buying Time Promotes Happiness, used a large, diverse group of people in four countries — the United States, Canada, Denmark, and The Netherlands and concluded that individuals who spend money on time-saving services report greater life satisfaction.

Their field experiment provided evidence that working adults report greater happiness after spending money on a time-saving purchase rather than on a material purchase. Put these two results together, and you can see that yes, using money to buy time can, in fact, buy happiness.

The study suggests that buying ourselves out of the negative experiences in our lives gives us positive effects that go above and beyond the money we’ve spent.
