Housekeepers in the Hamptons

Housekeepers who can turn a guest-filled house around midweek in July and keep the same standard when the family only comes out for the odd weekend in the spring.

the Hamptons

A housekeeper in the Hamptons works to a rhythm set by the calendar. From Memorial Day the house fills, guests come and go through the week, and linens, laundry and bedrooms turn over faster than in most primary homes. When summer ends the pace drops away, but sea air, sand and a house that sits empty for weeks at a time bring work of their own.

We place housekeepers who have kept fine homes to a consistent standard and who understand that a beach house can hold marble, antique wood, silver and good linen just as a townhouse does, all of it needing the right care. The goal is a home that looks the same on a quiet weekday in October as it does an hour before a dozen guests walk in.

The role in the Hamptons

Housekeeping through a Hamptons summer

Peak season is a question of volume as much as standards. One weekend can bring twelve guests, a run of dinners and bedrooms that need to be stripped, cleaned and remade between one set of visitors and the next. Laundry, ironing and pressing barely stop, and wardrobe care stretches to the family's summer clothes and whatever their guests bring. A good Hamptons housekeeper plans the week around arrivals and departures rather than around a fixed cleaning rota.

Coastal houses are also hard on finishes. Sand comes in on every pair of feet, salt air works on metal and glass, and humid summer weather is unkind to fabrics and fine wood. Knowing which product suits which surface, and how to protect delicate materials without damaging them, matters more out here, not less.

Outside the season the work shifts. A household may keep its housekeeper on through the autumn and winter to open and air the house before weekend visits, check rooms for damp or damage, rotate linens and keep the pantry and household supplies stocked and counted. Another may want a fuller arrangement for the summer and something lighter for the rest of the year.

Why Wellington

Why Wellington for Hamptons housekeeping

Most of the homes we staff already employ someone, and a Hamptons house in July may have an estate manager, a chef, a laundress and temporary help under one roof at once. Before we present anyone we work through who directs the housekeeper, who looks after the wardrobe and what happens when the family heads back to the city. Households that settle those questions up front tend to keep their staff for years.

We question candidates specifically about materials, and about how they move through occupied rooms without becoming part of the day, because a full summer house offers no quiet hours to clean around.

Housing and hours deserve an early conversation. Live-in accommodation is common on the East End, and seasonal rental costs rule out a daily commute for most candidates. We place housekeepers full-time, part-time, live-in and live-out, and we open seasonal searches in late winter so the right person is settled before the first guests arrive.

No housekeeper is introduced to a household until they have been thoroughly vetted.
